Kanto
The Kanto region is by far the largest region in Japan as it is home to approximately 1/3 of the Japan’s population with the Greater Tokyo Area located within Kanto. In total there are seven prefectures in the Kanto Region, they are Tokyo, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa.
The top destinations for travelers in Kanto, broken down by prefecture, are:
- Tokyo Prefecture:
- Tokyo – the capital city of Japan and one of the top destinations for tourists with an abundance of cultural, entertainment, dining, and shopping destinations.
- Gunma Prefecture:
- Kusatsu Onsen – one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan, featuring Yubatake, a hot spring water source with an output of over 5000 litres per minute.
- Oze National Park – a beautiful hiking destination featuring the Ozegahara Marshland and Ozenuma Pond.
- Tochigi Prefecture:
- Nikko – famous for its’ autumn colours, Nikko provides a wide variety of temples, shrines, and natural beauty as well as water falls.
- Ibaraki Prefecture:
- Kairakuen Garden – ranked as one of the best landscape gardens in Japan, Kairakuen is home to over 3,000 plum trees
- Saitama Prefecture:
- Chichibu – home to many inspiring shrines it also holds the Chichibu Night Festival every December featuring floats and a firework display
- Chiba Prefecture:
- Boso Peninsula – home of Kamogawa Seaworld and Mount Nokogiriyama
- Narita Airport
- Kanagawa Prefecture:
- Kamakura – a coastal town which is home to the Great Buddha and various temples (Hasedera, Hokokuji, Kenchoji, and Engakuji to name a few)
